First in her family to receive college degree

MURFREESBORO (May 9) — Alajah Gilbert, a Class of 2023 McKenzie High School graduate, became the first person in her family to earn a college degree, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) on Saturday, May 9.
Gilbert graduated Cum Laude, completing her degree in just three years.
To Gilbert, this milestone represents perseverance, sacrifice and the fulfillment of a dream.
Throughout her college journey, Gilbert balanced the demands of being a full-time student while also maintaining employment.
Gilbert shared that none of her accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering love, encouragement and support of her mother, LaShonda Williams.
"Her strength, sacrifices and belief in me have been the foundation of every accomplishment," Gilbert said of her mother. "This achievement belongs to her as much as it does to me."
As she celebrates this chapter, Gilbert is also mindful of the responsibility that comes with being a first-generation college graduate. Most of all, she hopes to inspire her younger sister, Aleecia, who is a rising senior at McKenzie High School.
"I hope to pave the way for my younger sister, encouraging her to dream big and showing her that higher education is possible through dedication, hard work and perseverance," Gilbert said.
Gilbert also encourages her fellow classmates from McKenzie's Class of 2023 to continue pursuing their goals and finish strong.
"Whether your path takes three years, four years or longer — stay committed to your education, trust the process and never lose sight of the future you are working toward," Gilbert said. "The journey may not always be easy, but earning your degree is a reward that no one can ever take away from you."
Gilbert's journey is far from over. This summer, she returns to her West Tennessee roots to work a summer job. In August, she will begin graduate studies at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where she will pursue a master's degree in Occupational Therapy.
Gilbert plans to work as an occupational therapist and, eventually, pursue her doctorate.
Over the next year and a half, Gilbert will dedicate herself to an intensive program, attending daily classes and clinical training as she works toward a career devoted to helping others live fuller, more independent lives.
Gilbert shared that she is grateful for everyone who has supported her along the way, and she is excited for what the future holds.
