ATWOOD—Road construction on the bypass around Atwood continues. Crews are finishing the section that connects U.S. 79 outside of Milan and State Route 70-A near West Carroll High School, where it will terminate.

Nichole Lawrence of the Tennessee Department of Transportation said the highway section is ahead of schedule and could possibly open in the fall of 2024. The original scheduled opening was May 2025.

Eventually, the expanded roadway will bypass both Atwood and Trezevant and then proceed to McKenzie to make one continuous four-lane or five contiguous lanes (with a middle turn lane).

The bypass around Atwood was the first in Carroll County, to be followed by the bypass around Trezevant and last, the four-lane to McKenzie from Trezevant.

The first of the three-segment project cost $29 million and is being built by Delta Contracting Company.

Plans for the three segments were first revealed during a public hearing at McKenzie High School in 1999.
