From the Aug 20, 2024 e-Edition
NASHVILLE — Leighann Horne, Supervisor of Education for McKenzie Special School District, is honored to be one of nine finalists for Tennessee Supervisor of the Year for the state of Tennessee.
Horne obtained her Bachelor of Science in Special Education and a minor in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She continued her education with masters degrees in Special Education and School Leadership and Administration.
Her career started in Special Education in Gibson County Schools, where she taught for 10 years. She then served as the Special Education Coordinator in Henry County before serving as the supervisor at McKenzie for seven years.
In her role at McKenzie, she is the instructional supervisor for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and the director of Special Education.
“I absolutely love working here. We have a small district and work very closely together; it just feels like family. We have some very dedicated teachers in our district, and we are truly here to serve our students, and we put them first,” said Horne.
“My passions include Special Education, classroom management and behavior, early literacy, and of course, my family.
“I was chosen as the finalist for Northwest Tennessee. There are nine finalists across the state. The next step in this process is a formal interview and speech with the Tennessee Department of Education, and the Supervisor of the Year for 2024-2025 will be announced in December. No matter what, I’m truly honored to have made it this far. I’m honored to spotlight not only Special Education but also our district because I believe we have an amazing district, and we’re moving forward and growing. We have great leaders, teachers, and staff members that come together every day for the betterment of our students, and I am blessed to be a part of this team - this family.”
