McKenzie Honors Fallen Heroes with Annual Flag Placement Tradition
From the May 26, 2026 e-Edition
McKENZIE — As the morning sun rose over Carroll County this weekend, a dedicated group of volunteers fanned out across local cemeteries, transforming green hillsides into seas of red, white, and blue. The annual Memorial Day flag placement tradition remains a cornerstone of the McKenzie community, ensuring that every veteran interred in the area is recognized for their service and sacrifice.
Spearheaded by the American Legion, the massive coordination effort brought together a multi-generational force of prior service and retired military personnel, and civilians working side-by-side. These volunteers spent Saturday and Sunday meticulously walking the grounds of Mt. Olivet Cemetery and Carroll Memorial Gardens, placing individual American flags at the headstones of generations of veterans.
It takes several hours of meticulous searching to ensure no one is overlooked. The effort extended to nearby Liberty All Cemetery, where a moving annual program features the reading of every interred veteran’s name aloud as their flag is set into the earth.
The weekend’s labor of love serves as a prelude to McKenzie’s and Huntingdon’s official remembrance services.
The volunteers who place the flags often recall shared memories with those interred as each flag is placed.
Following the community-driven efforts at the cemeteries, the focus transitions to Veterans Park in downtown McKenzie for the formal Memorial Day ceremony. The event historically features military guest speakers, the laying of a memorial wreath, and the somber notes of Taps echoing through the city center.
