The West Carroll Special School District has received a $2,900 Utrust grant to enhance its Youth Basketball Program, according to a press release from March 17. The grant is expected to help create new opportunities for students in first through sixth-grade across the rural Carroll County community.

The funding will allow the district to replace worn equipment, expand training tools and install adjustable rim attachments that lower standard 10-foot goals to age-appropriate heights of eight to nine feet — helping young athletes develop proper fundamentals and confidence early in their athletic journey.

West Carroll’s supervisor of instruction, Kellie Medina, applied for the grant to better serve primary and elementary students who are often experiencing organized sports for the first time.

“For many of our children, this program is their first opportunity to be part of a team,” Medina said. “We’re not just teaching basketball — we’re building confidence, discipline, teamwork and a sense of belonging. In a small rural district like ours, resources are limited, and much of our equipment has been heavily used over the years.

“This grant gives our students the chance to learn the right skills in the right way and experience success early on,” Medina continued. “When students see that they can achieve something on the court, that confidence carries with them into the classroom and beyond. The adjustable rims will be particularly impactful, allowing younger players to practice proper shooting form rather than straining to reach a regulation-height goal. Coaches will also be able to increase individual skill repetitions during practice, accelerating player development.”

West Carroll Jr./Sr. High School Principal Adam Douglas emphasized the long-term impact of the investment.

“In rural communities, school programs are at the heart of student engagement,” Douglas said. “When our youngest students walk into the gym, they deserve to feel capable and supported. Updated equipment and adjustable goals allow them to experience success while learning strong fundamentals. That early success builds confidence, and confidence fuels long-term involvement — not just in athletics, but in academics and leadership as well. This grant reflects our commitment to giving every student the tools they need to grow.”

Utrust Administrator Dr. Dan Tollett expressed pride in supporting the initiative.

“Utrust is pleased to partner with West Carroll Special School District in strengthening opportunities for students,” Tollett said. “We are committed to supporting school systems across Tennessee in their efforts to create environments where students thrive and educators feel valued.”

Utrust supports Tennessee school systems with unemployment matters and promotes the recognition and appreciation of school employees. West Carroll Special School District is one of 51 Tennessee school systems receiving Utrust mini-grants this month, with more than $1 million awarded statewide.
