McKENZIE — Bethel University is excited to announce the appointment of Craig Massey as the new varsity women’s head softball coach and Shasta Emerson as an assistant coach.
Massey is a former baseball standout for the Wildcats. He was a 1st Team All-TranSouth shortstop and 1st Team All-Region XI shortstop while at Bethel. Massey was named an NAIA All-American his junior season. He graduated from Bethel in 2013.
Massey played professional baseball for 13 seasons, most recently as a player coach with the Florence (KY) Y’alls in the Frontier League. He recently collected his 1,000th professional career hit. Craig was an eight-time all-star in the professional ranks and a three-time batting champ.
Craig is married to Shelby Cummings Massey. They have two children–a four-year-old
Bethel Interim Athletic Director Dave McCulley commented, “We are excited Craig is joining our coaching family. He brings a wealth of talent and knowledge to our program and university. He has worked with various age groups and has served as a hitting coach along with being a player coach in the professional ranks.”
Massey spoke about his decision to hang up his spikes to lead the Lady Wildcats. “I’m beyond grateful and humbled for the opportunity to serve as the head softball coach at Bethel University. I believe God has opened this door for a purpose, and I’m excited to pour into the lives of these young women—both spiritually and athletically. My goal is to build a Christ-centered culture where we pursue excellence, grow in faith, and glorify God in everything we do.”
Shanta Emerson returns to her alma mater in her first season as an assistant coach for the Bethel Lady Wildcat softball program. While this marks her debut in collegiate coaching, Coach Shanta brings qualities that make her a valuable addition to the team.
Shanta began her coaching journey serving on the staff of the Humboldt High School Lady Viking program in Humboldt, Tennessee.
Emerson serves with a natural ability to motivate her players. She continues to nurture her love for coaching and passion in mentoring the youth of her hometown high school, West Carroll High.
Coach Shanta said, “I am particularly passionate about fostering a positive team environment and helping players develop both their skills and their love for the game. I believe in the importance of communication, teamwork, and continuous improvement, encouraging athletes to push their limits while also supporting each other.” Coach Emerson added, “I look forward to working with Coach Massey and see good things in the future for our program.”
Outside of coaching, Shanta returns to the athletic Department as the Associate Sports Information Director.
Bethel Interim Athletic Director Dave McCulley stated, “We are very pleased to add Shanta to the staff. She has been a loyal part of our Bethel family. She loves softball and has a great passion for working with student athletes. She and Craig Massey will be a great team, and we look forward to seeing them do well.”
Shanta graduated from Bethel in 2014 and received a master’s in 2017.
