Several McKenzie High School students recently returned from the National Beta Conference in Orlando, with one ranking nationally in an art competition.

The Senior National Beta Conference was June 22-26 and challenged high school students from across America with competitions in math, science, reading, writing, art, leadership skills and more. McKenzie’s competitors were Kennedi Hutchens, Brody Berryhill, Tobey Brooks, Reese Gallimore, Destiny Huitzache, Wade Chandler, and Anastasia Markham.

Hutchens competed in Division I recyclable art, creating a sunset picture with recycled materials.

Berryhill, Brooks, Gallimore, Huitzache and Chandler competed as a team in Collaboration Connection, a leadership competition that challenged their critical thinking abilities.

Markham competed in and was ranked in the top 10 for the Division II Hand Drawn Anime competition, for which she drew an anime character of her creation.

The Beta Club is a national academic service club in which students must maintain a non-rounded GPA of 92 or better. These students have annual opportunities to compete at the biannual Regional Leadership Summit in the fall and spring and the State Convention in Nashville in late fall. Students who place in state and leadership competitions then have the opportunity to compete in the National Beta Convention, which changes locations each year.
