McKENZIE (October 10) — Northwest Tennessee Head Start hosted its very first Camp Day Friday, October 10. Children and parents alike spent the morning doing arts and crafts centered around camping traditions. The event taught young students about camping activities, including building tents and going fishing.

“Some of these kids have never been camping before,” said teacher Carol Holt. The event gave some students their first camping experiences.

Each classroom was given their own “campsite” at the school’s on-site playground. Holt’s classroom was “Camp Frizzle,” named after Miss Frizzle from the “Magic School Bus” books and TV series. Other campsites were “Camp Despicable” and “Camp Nemo.”

At each campsite, students painted posterboards that they would tape together to become makeshift tents. After crafts, they joined together for a camp sing-along and a camp story.

Camp Day lasted almost three hours, ending at 10:45 a.m.

McKenzie’s Northwest Tennessee Head Start, located at 931 W. Walnut Avenue, is in session weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It is part of a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children from birth to four years of age through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services for low-income families and families with children with disabilities. Children with disabilities can attend at no charge regardless of income.
