McKENZIE (August 2) — McKenzie Middle School hosted its annual preseason football jamboree Saturday at Randy Thomas Field with 12 teams participating in eight total contests.

Games were played two at a time, one on each half of the field, with two halves of 18 minutes each.

Offenses lined up at the 40 yard line and played normal four-down rules. Turnovers of any kind meant the defending team took over and reset at the 40. Touchdowns were followed by two-point conversion attempts.

McKenzie Rebels 14, McEwen Warriors 6
McKenzie’s defense made big plays in the first half to keep McEwen off the board, while Rebel quarterback Seth Stafford ran 21 yards for a touchdown on McKenzie’s first possession. Jake Ghyers converted for two points and an 8-0 lead.

Stafford ran for another touchdown early in the second half, but the two-point try failed.

McEwen got on the board late in the second half, but failed to convert for two.

Lexington Minutemen 24, Union City Tornadoes 6
Lexington scored twice in the first half, converting for two both times. The Minutemen scored again in the second half, and Union City got on the board for six.

McKenzie Rebels JV 28, McEwen Warriors JV 6
The JV Rebels also dominated defensively, and the offense gained momentum to pull away in the second half.

Rebel Makayan Gilbert scored the only points of the first half with a long run early in the contest.

Gilbert scored again on the first play of the second half, and a successful two-point try made it 14-0.

The Warriors answered with their lone touchdown, but failed to add two.

Rebel Navadius Owens scored on two long runs, then added two points.

The teams traded interceptions before Khalil Robinson scored McKenzie’s final touchdown. The two-point try was unsuccessful.

Lexington Minutemen JV 20, Union City Tornadoes JV 6
Lexington’s JV scored twice in the first half with one two-point conversion. Union City scored first in the second half, but the Minutemen answered in kind. Neither team converted for two in the second half.

Inman Bulldogs 12, Huntingdon Mustangs 0
In a scoreless first half, Huntingdon made a few big plays but was plagued by penalties.

Inman put together a couple of scoring drives in the second half, but failed the two-point tries.

Camden Lions 12, Gibson County Pioneers 6
Camden dominated the first half, scoring twice but failing on both two-point tries.

The second half was a defensive battle, but the Pioneers managed a late touchdown with no two-point conversion.

West Carroll War Eagles 8, Henderson North Cadets 8
West Carroll scored on their first possession and converted for two. Henderson North answered quickly to tie the contest at 8-8.

The Cadets saw a second-half touchdown negated by a penalty, and the half ended with no scoring.

Milan Bulldogs 14, Waverly Wildcats 12
Milan scored and added two on their first possession, and Waverly answered with six points. The Bulldogs added another touchdown and conversion, and Waverly answered again with just a touchdown.

The second half was a scoreless defensive battle.
