McKENZIE (May 26) — The City of McKenzie hosted a Memorial Day Ceremony Monday morning at downtown Veterans Memorial Park.

The speaker for the event was William Milam, Jr., U.S. Army Master Sergeant-Retired, a Henry County native with 21 years of decorated service including multiple deployments.

The ceremony began with McKenzie Mayor Ryan Griffin leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was played, and a prayer was delivered by Greg Jones, E-3 Seaman, U.S. Coast Guard-Retired.

The patriotic classic “God Bless the U.S.A.” was played, followed by the military anthems. Present members of each branch stood for recognition during their respective song.

Griffin introduced Milam, who said, in part, “We gather today to remember and honor those who have given their lives for our freedom. They were ordinary people who rose to extraordinary heights. Their sacrifice is a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of our nation. Let us never forget the sacrifices they made, and let us work together to ensure that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”

Next, Armand Hebert, E-5 Seaman, U.S. Coast Guard-Retired, recited an original poem, “Veteran’s Sacrifice”.

The ceremony ended with the placement of the memorial wreath at the memorial monument by Dana Deem, Master Sergeant, USAF-Retired, and the playing of Taps.

Refreshments were served to the veterans and other guests gathered.
