McKENZIE (October 7) — In the first of two visits from Lifeline Blood Services this school year, McKenzie High School students exceeded the school’s goal of donating 40 units of blood. By the end of the day, Lifeline received 49 units of blood. Of the donors, 42 were students, four were staff members and three were outside donors.

“One pint of blood can save three people’s lives,” said Sherrona Taylor, regional Lifeline coordinator and donor recruiter. “Each student who donates one pint is saving three people’s lives.”

In the library, where Lifeline employees tested students’ donation abilities before sending them outside to the Bloodmobiles, McKenzie High School students helped school nurse Brandi Parham administer snacks and soda to donors. Donors also received a Halloween-themed t-shirt.

“The students are really excited about helping us save lives,” said Taylor.

Lifeline Blood Services sets up at McKenzie High School each fall and spring semester, hoping to receive blood donations from students, teachers and outside participants. Students 16 years and older are encouraged to donate at least three times before graduation so they can receive a red cord to wear to their graduation ceremony.
