Mustangs Romp Back with 49-6 Win Over Halls

HALLS (September 12) — After only scoring nine points and rushing for 107 yards last week against Milan, the Mustangs bounced back with 355 yards of total offense and defeated Halls 49-6 to improve to 3-1 for the season and 1-1 in Region 7-2A. The Mustangs also intercepted two passes and returned one for a TD for the second week in a row, and held the Tigers to 46 yards and 14 of 26 passes for 155 yards in the game.
The Mustangs scored three times in the first half, and the first touchdown came after a Tiger punt. Tyreke Hutch on the Mustangs’ second play from scrimmage, scampered for 42 yards to paydirt. Greyson Anderson made the first of his seven PATs for the night to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
The Mustang defense then forced another Tiger punt and took over at midfield, and reached the Tiger 12 yard line and fumbled the ball. The Tigers recovered at the 14. Hayes Eubanks then intercepted a pass on second down and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown. Anderson made the score 14-0 with the PAT.
The Mustangs then took over after a Tiger punt at the Halls’ 47 and six plays later found the end zone on an 11-yard run by sophomore running back Colt Wood. Anderson was true on the kick, and the Mustangs held a 21-0 lead late in the second quarter.
The Tigers answered with their only scoring drive of the game by going to the air. The Tigers moved 69 yards in 11 plays with five of those plays being through the air, and Tiger QB Jackson Booker completed four and the last completion covered 18 yards to Caden Pipus for the touchdown. The extra point was missed and the score stood at 21-6 at the half.
The Mustangs started the second half with possession and scored in four plays after starting at their 44, and Hutch scored his second TD of the night on a 39-yard run. Anderson was perfect again and the Mustangs led 28-6.
The Mustang defense then held Halls on downs at their own 29, and Hayes Eubanks scored on second down on a 21-yard run. Anderson booted the PAT for a 35-6 lead.
The Tigers moved from their 17 to the Mustang nine in 12 plays, but the Mustangs held and covered the 91 yards to the end zone in 10 plays and scored on a 24-yard run by Kenton Smith on the fifth play of the 4th quarter. Anderson gave the Mustangs a 42-6 lead with the point after.
Lucas Smith then intercepted a Booker pass at the Tiger 13 and two plays later, Kenton Smith put the final points on a Mustang win with an eight-yard run for the TD and Anderson dotted the final point for a 49-6 win.
Hutch led the Mustangs with 133 yards on six carries. Eubanks ran for 103 yards on 10 carries and Smith added 62 yards on nine carries.
The Mustangs play their first home game of the season Friday at Paul Ward Stadium as they will host JCM for a region contest. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
