McKenzie Candidate Dies

CARROLL COUNTY — Tennessee voters as well as voters throughout the nation can vote in national elections today, Tuesday, November 3.
One local election includes the name of Deborah Wynn (Newman) Riley for McKenzie City Council. She died October 30. Her funeral arrangements are Wednesday November 4, 2 p.m. The graveside service are at Archer’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Halls, Tenn. Her husband, Larry, died May 5, 2016. He was the retired pastor of the First United Methodist Church-McKenzie. Her vacancy will be filled by the Mayor and City Council through appointment.
In Carroll County, voters can vote in-person on election day between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at their local voting precinct. Voters should have their photo identification and voter registration card with them. No campaign signage or clothing are allowed within 100 feet of the polling places by candidates, campaign workers or voters.
The Banner will also release the results of polling on Tuesday evening as the Carroll County Election Commission releases the totals. Look for those on the Banner website.
Early voting for the November 3 local, state and national elections began Wednesday, October 14 and ended Thursday, October 29, 2020 throughout Tennessee. Any registered voter may participate in early voting held exclusively at the Carroll County Election Commission in the Carroll County Office Complex.
Early voting totals are significantly more than four years ago. In Carroll, a total of 8,036 voted early or by absentee (mail-in). That compares to 5,316 in the year 2016.
In Henry County, early voting and absentee totals are 10,692 in 2020 compared to 8,076 in 2016.
In Weakley County, early and absentee voting totals are 10,577 compared to 7,642 in 2016.
In Tennessee, early and absentee totals for the year 2020 are 2,280,767 compared to 1,675,697 in the year 2016. That’s an increase of 605,088.
The local ballot in Carroll County for November 3 for national, state, and local elections is as follows. The official printed ballot will not include the names of three write-in candidates — two from McKenzie and one from Trezevant.
Charles Pruneau is a write-in candidate for McKenzie Councilman of Ward 6 and Jessie L. Townes is a write-in candidate for Ward 1-McKenzie. Both are incumbents and both failed to get on the official ballot.
Bobby McAlexander is a write-in candidate for Mayor of Trezevant. He is challenging incumbent Bobby Blaylock.
The citizens of Huntingdon have a referendum to consider whether or not to allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages on premises at approved locations. A petition with at least 10 percent of the number of registered voters who cast ballots in the last gubernatoral election called for the referendum.
The following persons are seeking seats in respective municipal elections within the county.
In Atwood aldermen’s race, two of three of the candidates will be elected. The candidates are Taylor Coulter, Ricky Long (incumbent), and Mike Tolley.
In Huntingdon’s aldermen’s race, all incumbents Carl Byars, Charles Hodges, Nina Smothers, and Tim Tucker and Mayor Dale Kelley qualified. Also on the ballot is liquor by the drink. The voters approved package liquor two years ago.
In Hollow Rock, two candidates Curt Lumley and Morris Rogers qualified for three available aldermen positions.
In Bruceton, three candidates qualified for the three available alderman positions. Chris Cole, Cliff Sturdivant and Robert Scott Higdon qualified.
In McKenzie, Councilwoman Debbie Riley qualified for Ward IV. Incumbents Charles Pruneau and Jessie Townes are running for their respective seats as write-in candidates.
In Trezevant, three incumbent aldermen and the mayor are seeking reelection. Mayor Bobby Blaylock and Aldermen Robert Argo, Christy Creyssels and newly appointed member Leon Lyell are on the ballot.
In the state race, John Stevens (R) and Yahweh Yahweh (I) qualified for Tennessee State Senate District 24.
In Tennessee House of Representative, Tandy Darby (R) and Jeff Washburn (I) are seeking the District 76 seat; Curtis Halford (R) is seeking the District 79 seat.
United States House of Representatives District 8 candidates include David Kustoff (R) and Erka Stotts Pearson (D).
United States Senate candidates include Bill Hagerty (R), Marquita Bradshaw (D), Yomi Faparusi, Sr., Jeffrey Alan Grunau, Ronnie Henley, G. Dean Hill, Steven Hooper, Aaron James, Elizabeth McLeod, Kacey Morgan, Eric Stansberry.
Candidates for U.S. President include: Donald J. Trump (R), Joseph Biden (D), Don Blankenship, Howie Hawkins, Jo Jorgensen, Alyson Kennedy, Gloria La Riva, Kanye West.
In Henry County, voters will select a mayor and sheriff after both submitted their resignations. Sheriff Monte Belew accepted a position as head of security at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Damon Lowe is interim sheriff. County Mayor Brent Greer’s resignation will be official after the election. He is retiring.
Candidates for county mayor include: Carlton Gerrill, the Republican nominee and independent candidates John Penn Ridgeway and Tim Wirgau.
Candidates for Henry County Sheriff are Josh Mann Frey, the Republican nominee, and Damon Lowe.
In Cottage Grove, Gary McCaig is the lone candidate for mayor. Only two candidates, David Jackson and John Weiher, III are seeking two of the four available seats.
In the City of Henry, Dane W. Allen and Dustin Odom are seeking the office of mayor. Four people are seeking two seats as aldermen. They are Charles Barnes, Faye Lowery, Keith Qualls and Cindy Rainey. An unexpired seat is being sought by a lone candidate, Charolette Barnes.
In the City of McKenzie, Debbie Riley is the lone candidate seeking the Ward IV seat for councilman. The district extends into Carroll County as well.
In Paris, four persons are seeking two seats on the Paris City Commission. They are John Etheridge, Jackie Jones,, Herbert Earl Kendall and James Matthew Wyatt.
In Puryear, David Varner is the lone candidate for mayor and Verla Smith is the lone candidate for city recorder. Two candidate are seeking two seats as aldermen. They are Rebecca Haynes and Bill Robinson.
In Weakley County, in addition to the state and national elections, local elections are held in Dresden, Gleason, Greenfield, Martin and Sharon.
In Dresden, four persons are seeking three seats on the Dresden City Council. Those are Ralph W. Cobb, Jr., Joyce Hurt, Kenneth W. Moore, and Willie Jay Parker.
In Gleason, two are seeking the office of mayor. Those are Charles E. Anderson and Diana Poole. Eight persons are seeking four seats on the Gleason City Council. Those are Charles Bookout, Danny Browning, Wade Cook, James Mayor Hines, Tommy Hodges, Teresa Johnson, Cruz Legens and Keith Ray Radford.
In Greenfield, Mayor Cindy McAdams is running unopposed. Four persons are seeking four at-large seats on the Greenfield City Council. They are Donald Ray High, Kelly Keylon, James Roy Pope and Chris Turbyville. One is seeking the lone unexpired seat, Don Allen.
In Martin, There are three candidates for city council, who are each running unopposed. They are Danny Mac Nanney in Ward 1; Marvin Flatt is Ward 2; and Randy Edwards in Ward 3.
In McKenzie, in the Council Ward 1 seat, no candidates qualified to appear on the ballot. However, incumbent Jessie Townes is seeking write-in votes as a certified candidate. The district extends into Carroll County as well.
In Sharon, Ali Stalter is the lone candidate for mayor. Four persons are seeking two seats on the Board of Aldermen. They are Austin Bond, Stewart Boussard, Jesse Lee Doster and Wanda Hamlin.
