McKENZIE (September 16) — CASA, Court-Appointed Special Advocates (for children) was the featured program at the September 16 meeting of the Rotary Club of McKenzie.
Cammy Estes and Annie Searock represented the local organization that serves as the advocates for children who are removed from their home and placed in foster care or with other family members.
CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for the child and are appointed by the judge. General Sessions and Juvenile Judge Michael King supports the program and shortly after he was elected, he encouraged the agency to expand to Carroll County.
Many times, children are removed from their homes, placed in foster care, and often are relocated from their schools and friends. CASA volunteers are the eyes and ears for the children. They work independently of the Department of Children’s Services to best serve the child. CASA members in Carroll County work with the child and report their independent findings to the judge.
Estes said it is often overwhelming for the child to be placed in a new home, away from their parents and siblings. CASA serves as a special friend to the child.
CASA operates with volunteers. For more information, contact Cammy Estes, volunteer supervisor, at 731-358-5774,or email carrollcasa.volunteers@gmail.com.
