HUNTINGDON (August 1) — Walmart marked the completion of a $7 million renovation Friday with a celebration and ribbon-cutting, featuring activities and giveaways for the public and recognition of some long-time employees.
The event began with the playing of the National Anthem by the Huntingdon High School band and a flag ceremony by the Veterans Honor Guard of Parker’s Crossroads.
Then the Huntingdon High School cheerleaders performed a special cheer for Walmart.
Ricky Price of Pepsi Mid-America spoke about his positive experience with Walmart in Huntingdon since it first opened in 1977. He noted that the store contributes to the community in many ways.
Store Manager Monica Hill spoke about the corporation’s investment into the Huntingdon store to better serve customers.
She then presented grant checks to four entities. The HHS Beta Club was awarded $1,000. Integrity Sports, a youth basketball league, was also presented $1,000. The McKenzie Police Department was given $3,000 for its “Shop with a Cop” program. Finally, the Webb Alumni Association was presented $1,500.
Longtime employees were recognized, including Ginger Smith (30 years), Elizabeth Seiber (33 years), Rita Ringold and Michelle Shelton (35 years) and Perry Blakeman (48 years). Blakeman has worked at Huntingdon Walmart since it opened.
The ribbon-cutting was then held, with Blakeman having the honors of making the cut. He was joined by the other longtime employees, Hill, Huntingdon Mayor Chad Edwards, Carroll County Chamber President Brad Hurley and Carroll County Mayor Joseph Butler.
Drawings were held for several giveaways, including gift cards, televisions and grills.
Activities continued after the official event as several vendors gave away samples of products. Prairie Farms was on hand with a calf and its mother that guests could pet and feed.
Inside the entrance, cupcakes were served in front of the Huntingdon-themed mural added during the renovation.
