Tater Town is a busy place as the Gleason Gazelles and the Gleason community gears up for the annual Tater Town Special. This year’s theme is “46 Years Of Coming Home.” The 2019 Grand Marshal is Mr. Jimmy Belew. He will be recognized, Saturday at 12 p.m., for his selfless service to the Gleason community.
A new event added this year is the “Lil’ Tater Bakers”. This cooking event is for young bakers who would love to cook up something really special. Classes are for 4-6 year olds and 7-10 year olds. Registration fees are $15 and entitles the child to a personalized keepsake apron.
The 2019 Tater Town Block Party, titled “Peace, Love and Tater Town”, is set for Tuesday night, August 27, in downtown Gleason. There will be a DJ providing music from 6:30 p.m. until dark, followed by fireworks. Activities include a sidewalk chalk coloring contest, train Rides, fire truck rides, jumpy houses, tie dye costume contest and “Find the Golden Tater” contest. Several food trucks present at the Block Party.
Youth night is for Wednesday, August 28, at 7:15 p.m. and will feature youth bingo after all participate in a short devotional.
Adult bingo is set for Thursday night beginning at 7 p.m. on the Gazelle Grounds. During intermission is the annual Gazelle cake auction, with proceeds benefiting the Gleason Community Benevolence Fund. Gleason’s best cooks have been asked to prepare their finest to go on the auction block.
The 2019 Sweet Potato Bake Off will be held at the Gazelle Grounds on Friday night, August 30. Entries must be at the cook booth by 5 p.m. First place will receive a $50 cash prize, with second and third receiving gift certificates from Simply Southern Café. The Community BBQ is Friday night, August 30. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Admission will be $7. The band Flashback will be on hand to entertain.
The annual JC Carey 5K Memorial Race starts the Saturday morning events on August 31. Registration will be at 6:30 a.m. in front of Gleason School, with the race to start at 7 a.m. The Jr Parade starts at 10 a.m. followed by the Grand Parade. All horses will register at the Gleason Saddle Club prior to the parade. There is an antique tractor and truck show on the school grounds. Live entertainment, arts and crafts, food and jumpy houses will begin at 11 a.m. on the Gazelle Grounds.
The week’s festivities conclude on Sunday, September 1 with a community wide worship service hosted by Gleason Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The Gleason Gazelles wish to invite everyone to attend the 2019 Tater Town Special.
