The Tennessee General Assembly passed almost 600 new bills in the spring. On July 1, 177 of those bills came into effect — including a bill that removes the monitoring requirement for boating safety examinations.

The bill, HB0530, was introduced to expand access to rural Tennesseans and to provide flexibility to individuals who work during standard business hours. Boating safety education examinations can now be taken unproctored from any location.

Previously, individuals who wished to obtain a boating license had to take a boating safety examination in person, under the supervision of a proctor.

Tennessee law requires Tennesseans born after January 1, 1989, to have a TWRA-issued Boating Safety Education Certificate to operate a personal watercraft or motorboat.
