McKENZIE — The church family of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of McKenzie is hosting a service of dedication for the new sanctuary on Sunday, October 3, 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow.
First Cumberland Presbyterian moved from its historic building on Stonewall Street in 2002 into the Worship and Family Life Center, 16835 Highland Drive on February 3, 2002, where the congregates worshipped until the opening of the new adjacent sanctuary on January 10, 2021. The completion of the sanctuary marked the culmination of a vision laid out over two decades.
The groundbreaking for the new sanctuary was February 10, 2013. The outside walls and roof of the sanctuary were completed in 2013-14. The steeple was added on July 24, 2014. With the outer shell complete, the church family chose to retire all indebtedness on construction before moving forward with the interior. That debt was retired in 2018. The Building Commission under the leadership of Tracy Webb met with TLM architects and Lashlee-Rich contractors to complete the interior. The work was completed in 2020 and the first worship service was January 10, 2021.
The original stained glass windows adorn the sanctuary as well as the pipe organ that was purchased in the 1950s by Fannie Baxter Moore.
The sanctuary has a high-tech sound and light system and video monitors throughout the facility.
The church family invites the public to attend the dedication service and reception on Sunday.
