McKENZIE (February 21) — The District 11A Girls Basketball Tournament concluded Friday with championship and consolation contests at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena.
The Huntingdon Fillies claimed the district title with a 51-28 win over the McKenzie Lady Rebels. Prior to that was the consolation game in which the West Carroll Lady War Eagles sealed third place with a 64-36 win over the Clarksburg Lady Rockets.
Following the games, awards were presented to the top four teams as well as to the All-Academic, All-District and All-Tournament teams (see separate story).
All four teams advance to the Region 6A tournament scheduled to begin Friday with games hosted by higher seeds. The champion Fillies host Collinwood. The Lady War Eagles travel to Summertown, and the Lady Rockets travel to Loretto. Those games tip off at 6 p.m. The runner-up Lady Rebels host Wayne County at Crisp Arena at 7 p.m.
Region semifinals are scheduled for Monday, March 2 at Wayne County High School.
Dates and locations of all region games are subject to change.
Championship: Huntingdon Fillies 51, McKenzie Lady Rebels 28
The Fillies had a 15-6 lead after the opening frame, led by Brooke Butler and Adyn Swenson with five points each, each with a three-pointer. Kaci Fuller also hit a three, and Addison Postlethwait had a pair. Lilly Bennett had all six Lady Rebel points, including a three.
Huntingdon had a 9-8 edge in the second quarter, led by Tyasia Reed with seven points. Fuller added a pair. Shelby Davis led McKenzie with four points. Savannah Nesbitt and Anna Callahan each had a pair. At the half, Huntingdon led 24-14.
The Fillies had a 12-8 advantage in the third, led by Postlethwait with seven points, including a three. Fuller scored three points, and Swenson added a pair. Bennett led the Lady Rebels with four points. Dani Dyer and Kylie Reynolds each had a pair. Heading into the final frame, the Fillies led 36-22.
Huntingdon sealed the win with a 15-6 tilt in the fourth, led by Butler and Reed with five points each, Butler with a three-pointer. Swenson scored three points, and Fuller added a pair. Davis, Bennett and Callahan each added a pair for McKenzie.
Tyasia Reed led the Fillies with a dozen points. Brooke Butler, Kaci Fuller and Adyn Swenson each scored ten. Butler had a pair of threes, and Fuller and Swenson each had one.
Lilly Bennett led the Lady Rebels with a dozen, including a three-pointer.
Consolation: West Carroll Lady War Eagles 64, Clarksburg Lady Rockets 36
The Lady War Eagles had a 13-10 edge after the first frame, led by Macey Cunningham with seven points, including a three-pointer. Amaya Thompson, Tatym Keymon and Mia Jones each had a pair. Makiya Abdallah led the Lady Rockets with four points. Krista Noble hit a three, Sami Roney had a pair, and Ashlyn Yarbrough hit a free throw.
West Carroll added to the lead with a 14-9 advantage in the second quarter, led by Cunningham with eight points, including a three. Keymon hit a three, Thompson added a pair, and Jones hit a freebie. Abdallah again led Clarksburg with four, Yarbrough hit a three-pointer, and Kyleigh Scott had a pair. At the half, the Lady War Eagles led 27-19.
The third was a 14-14 wash. Cunningham led West Carroll with a dozen, including a pair of threes. Thompson added a pair. Adballah led the Lady Rockets with six points. Roney scored four with a three, Scott hit a three, and Grace Bartholomew hit a free throw. Entering the final frame, West Carroll led 41-33.
The Lady War Eagles pulled away 23-3 in the fourth, led by Thompson with six points. Keymon scored five with a three, and M. Cunningham and Gracie Cunningham each hit a three. Denver Brooks, Alyssa Butler and Kaylee Butler each had a pair. Bartholomew had a pair for Clarksburg, and Abdallah hit a freebie.
Lady War Eagle Macey Cunningham led all scorers with 30 points, including five three-pointers. Amaya Thompson scored a dozen, and Tatym Keymon had ten points with a pair of threes.
Makiya Abdallah led the Lady Rockets with 15 points.
