McKENZIE (February 18) — The District 11A Girls Basketball Tournament continued Tuesday at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena with a pair of semifinal contests.
First, the Huntingdon Fillies pulled away early to take a 62-22 win over the Clarksburg Lady Rockets. Then, the McKenzie Lady Rebels used a late surge to win a competitive game against the West Carroll Lady War Eagles, 47-35.
The Fillies and Lady Rebels would meet in the championship game Friday; the Lady Rockets and Lady War Eagles would battle for third. All four teams advance to the Region 6A Tournament.
Huntingdon Fillies 62, Clarksburg Lady Rockets 22
The Fillies had a 17-9 lead after the opening frame, led by Tyasia Reed, Adyn Swenson and Addison Postlethwait with four points each; Reed and Swenson each hit a three-pointer. Brooklyn Williams scored three points, and Brooke Butler had a pair. Lady Rockets Ashlyn Yarbrough, Krista Noble and Jasmine Bailey each hit a three.
Huntingdon pulled away 19-2 in the second quarter, led by Butler and Swenson with six points each, Butler on a pair of threes. Kaci Fuller scored three points, and Postlethwait and Reed each added a pair. Yarbrough had Clarksburg’s two points. At the half, Huntingdon led 36-11.
The Fillies had a 13-6 advantage in the third, led by Fuller with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Reed scored three points, and Swenson added a pair. Yarbrough hit a three for the Lady Rockets, Caselyn Derryberry had a pair, and Sami Roney hit a free throw. Heading into the final frame, the Fillies led 49-17.
Huntingdon capped the win with a 13-5 tilt in the fourth, led by Swenson with four points. Butler, Greenlee Sharp, Lia Fuller and Kamaya Harris each had a pair. Kyleigh Scott scored all five points for Clarksburg.
Huntingdon’s Adyn Swenson led all scorers with 16 points, including a three-pointer. Kaci Fuller scored eleven with a pair of threes. Brooke Butler and Tyasia Reed each scored ten, Butler with a pair of threes and Reed with one.
Ashlyn Yarbrough led the Lady Rockets with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.
McKenzie Lady Rebels 47, West Carroll Lady War Eagles 35
The Lady Rebels had a 14-11 lead after the first frame, led by Dani Dyer, Lilly Bennett and Anna Callahan with four points each. Shelby Davis had a pair. Macey Cunningham led the Lady War Eagles with four points. Mia Jones hit a three-pointer, and Amaya Thompson and Tatym Keymon each had a pair.
McKenzie increased the lead with a 12-7 advantage in the second quarter, led by Camille Travis with five points, including a three. Dyer also hit a three, and Davis and Bennett each added a pair. Keymon led West Carroll with four points, and Jones hit another three-pointer. At the half, the Lady Rebels led 26-18.
The Lady War Eagles cut into the deficit with a 10-8 edge in the third, led by Keymon with a three. Cunningham, Thompson and Jones each added a pair, and Denver Brooks hit a free throw. Bennett led McKenzie with six points, and Savannah Nesbitt had a pair. Entering the final frame, the Lady Rebels led 34-28.
McKenzie sealed the win with a 13-7 tilt in the fourth, led by Callahan with six points. Bennett scored five, and Davis added a pair. Cunningham, Thompson and Keymon each added a pair for West Carroll, and Jones hit a free throw.
Lady Rebel Lilly Bennett led all scorers with 17 points. Anna Callahan scored ten.
Tatym Keymon led the Lady War Eagles with eleven points, including a three-pointer. Mia Jones scored nine with a pair of threes.
