Jackson Symphony to Perform Free Concert in Huntingdon

The Jackson Symphony presents a free community concert on Huntingdon’s Court Square Thursday evening, July 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. “Symphony on the Move” is an hour-long event sponsored by Huntingdon’s Paula Atkins and Clarksburg Mayor Howell Wayne Todd in cooperation with The Dixie and the Town of Huntingdon.

“The arts are such an important part of our lives, whether we realize it or not,” said Mrs. Atkins, “and to bring something like the Jackson Symphony to town is very special.”

Mrs. Atkins saw an opportunity to use a spot on the Symphony’s summer schedule and called Mayor Howell Todd to see what he thought about the two of them covering the cost. “He said he was ‘all in,’ and we took it from there,” said Atkins.

Todd said his response to Mrs. Atkins was immediate. “Paula and I are no different from many Carroll Countians who are appreciative of the role good classical music plays in our own lives. We wanted to make an effort to have it available to our local friends. Music has been so important to me all my life, and good classical music ranks right up there very close to the old hymns in providing a good tonic for my soul,” he said.

Sherry Freeman, Executive Director of the Symphony, said, “We are excited to bring our ‘Symphony on the Move’ community concert to Huntingdon.” This will be the group’s 42nd community concert. The concert represents all genres of music and entertains a large variety of age groups with recognizable tunes from musicals, today’s top hits, and a blend of classical pieces.

Mayor Todd encourages people to “come in their casual summer attire of tee shirts, polos, shorts, and flip flops, along with a comfortable lawn chair, and maybe a fan, to enjoy the music.”

Angela DeMaris at The Dixie also encourages event-goers to eat and shop at many of Huntingdon’s local businesses.

Atkins and Todd express deep appreciation for the assistance of Angela DeMaris at the Dixie and Kim Carter at City Hall in providing the Court Square area for the event. In the case of inclement weather, the Dixie is an alternate location.
