McKENZIE (February 15) — The District 11A Girls Basketball Tournament began Saturday at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena with a pair of elimination games.
First, the four-seed Clarksburg Lady Rockets protected an early lead to take a 53-39 win and end the season of the five-seed Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Lady Tigers.
Then, the three-seed West Carroll Lady War Eagles coasted to a 56-22 victory over the six-seed Big Sandy Lady Red Devils, ending their season.
The tournament continues Tuesday at Crisp with the semifinal round. Clarksburg will face the top-seed Huntingdon Fillies at 6 p.m., followed by West Carroll meeting the two-seed McKenzie Lady Rebels.
All four teams will then play Friday in the finals. Tuesday’s losers will battle for third place at 6 p.m., followed by the championship contest.
All four teams advance to the Region 6A tournament.
Clarksburg Lady Rockets 53, Central Lady Tigers 39
Clarksburg jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the opening frame, led by Krista Noble with ten points, including a pair of three-pointers. Ashlyn Yarbrough scored seven points, Jasmine Bailey had a pair, and Makiya Abdallah hit a free throw. Brylee Williams scored four for Central, and Malorie Clements-Tillman hit a three.
The Lady Tigers cut into the deficit with a 14-9 advantage in the second quarter, led by Williams with five points. Clements-Tillman scored four. Nevaeh Davis hit a three, and Mykenzie Burton had a pair. Yarbrough led the Lady Rockets with seven, including a three-pointer, and Caselyn Derryberry had a pair. At the half, Clarksburg led 29-21.
The Lady Rockets doubled up Central 10-5 in the third, led by Noble with five points, including a three. Abdallah scored three points, and Bailey added a pair. Williams had all five Lady Tiger points, including a three. Heading into the final frame, the Lady Rockets led 39-26.
Clarksburg sealed the win with a 14-13 edge in the fourth, led by Yarbrough with six points. Derryberry scored five, Sami Roney had a pair, and Bailey hit a freebie. Clements-Tillman led Central with ten points, including a three, and Burton also hit a three.
Lady Rocket Ashlyn Yarbrough led all scorers with 20 points, including a three-pointer. Krista Noble scored 15 with a trio of threes.
Malorie Clements led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, including a pair of threes. Brylee Williams scored 14 with a three.
West Carroll Lady War Eagles 56, Big Sandy Lady Red Devils 22
West Carroll stormed out to a 19-3 lead after the first frame, led by Mia Jones with five points. Macey Cunningham and Amaya Thompson each scored four. Alyssa Butler hit a three-pointer, and Tatym Keymon also had three points. Ashlyn Berry led Big Sandy with two points, and Lydia Dykes hit a free throw.
The Lady War Eagles upped the lead with a 14-6 advantage in the second quarter, led by Thompson with eight points. Cunningham, M. Jones and Denver Brooks each had a pair. Berry hit a three for the Lady Red Devils, Kaylee Stockdale had a pair, and Avery Mayberry hit a free throw. At the half, the Lady War Eagles led 33-9.
West Carroll enjoyed a 17-7 tilt in the third, led by Thompson with six points. Cunningham scored four, and Octavia Jones had three points. M. Jones and Kaylee Butler each had a pair. Berry led Big Sandy with four points, and Lauren Flowers hit a three. Entering the final frame, the Lady War Eagles led 50-16.
The fourth was a 6-6 wash. Janzen Winberry led West Carroll with a three-pointer. K. Butler added a pair, and O. Jones hit a freebie. Berry had all six Lady Red Devil points, inlcuding a three.
Lady War Eagle Amaya Thompson led all scorers with 18 points. Macey Cunningham scored ten, and Mia Jones had nine points.
Ashlyn Berry led Big Sandy with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
