Greetings,

June was a busy month for both our seniors and the June bugs! We celebrated some well-known observances, as well as a few you may not be familiar with. For example, on Donald Duck Day, we played a matching game called “Can You Find a Pair?” where some geese tried to impersonate the ducks. Those who found a matching pair received a prize. On National Herb and Spice Day, we created lovely sachets for the residents to place in their linen closets, and they smelled wonderful. For National Peanut Butter Day, we gathered to make homemade cookies, which the staff served as dessert during dinner. On National Root Beer Day, everyone enjoyed a frothy root beer float. National Take a Drive Day took us on a trip to the countryside to visit a Mennonite produce stand and their general store. On National Pink Day, we hosted a special PINGO game where all the prizes were pink in color, and there were plenty of food items, so our guys joined in the fun. These unique observances are a great way to shake things up!

At Lakeside, we play BINGO every Wednesday. This month, we had a couple of students volunteer to earn community service hours, and we loved having them join us. If you are a senior looking for service hours, please contact us. We enjoy pairing the younger generation with our seniors. Speaking of youth, Overflow Church youth came out on their service day and decorated our sidewalks with wonderful chalk art and inspirational sayings. Many residents take daily walks and enjoyed seeing all the bright colors.

On a more serious note, we held a Flag Day ceremony this month. Former American Legion Commander Danny Simpson shared some history about the flag and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as a prayer for the nation. On Juneteenth, residents learned about the significance of the day, which is recognized as a Federal Holiday. On the 26th, we loaded up the bus and visited the Veterans Home in Humboldt, where we delivered 150 handwritten notes thanking them for their service and our freedom. We stopped for lunch at Famous Soul Food, and everyone loved the meal—residents are already asking when we can go back! On the 27th, we celebrated National Bomb Pop Day with a visit from Kathy McGee of Baptist Hospice, who handed out red, white, and blue icy treats along with some patriotic fans. On the 28th, we traveled to the Huntingdon Civic Center to see the Fireworks Show after a stop by Wendy’s for a Frosty.

We celebrated Father’s Day with the theme “Racing to Tell Our Dads Happy Father’s Day.” Our multipurpose room was decorated with Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, traffic cones, and racing signs. The dads had a black-and-white checkered flag race, with Elbert Hatley coming in first and Norman Maggard right behind him in second place. The winner received a “Green is for Go” stuffed basket. We also created a concession stand and served Shasta Cola, nachos, and corn dogs. Kevin Watson brought out his 1979 Trans Am, igniting some nostalgia as we reminisced about the past.

We had seven birthdays in June. Among them was Ruth Wall Turner, who turned 90. Her family invited us to her birthday gathering, where a variety of cupcakes and punch were served. So many people came by to share this special day with her! Margie Gibson celebrated her 86th birthday with a catered meal surrounded by her family and closest friends. Other residents celebrating in June included Mary Lacey, Marilyn Ward, Joan Gibson, and Jerry Weatherford. Additionally, we welcomed two new residents, Sue Smith and Betty Grimble.

Until next time...
