10 YEARS AGO — McKenzie U.S. Postal Service mail carriers Jimmy Putman and Steve Sherwood each earned a 1,000,000 Mile Award. Carriers must reach the milestone or perform 30 years of service without an at-fault accident. Putman and Sherwood were the first two McKenzie carriers to achieve the goal.
20 YEARS AGO — VFW Post 4939 honored local Voice of Democracy speech contest winners with a dinner. Earning first place was Trent Rutledge, followed by Anna Garrett in second and John Lankford in third. Rutledge also won first place in the district competition.
50 YEARS AGO — Showing at the Park Theatre: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn; Helga; Planet of Life; and Killers Three starring Robert Walker and Diane Varsi.
