    CARROLL COUNTY (April 8) — On Monday, many in North America stopped mid-day to gaze in wonder at the total solar eclipse, a rare event that won’t be visible again from the contiguous United States until August 23, 2044. Carroll Countians experienced 97.9% coverage of the sun.

  • County Commissioner, Spouse Plead Guilty to Felony Theft

    HUNTINGDON (April 5) — On Friday, after nearly a year of delays, the case against Carroll County Commissioner William “Lin” Smith, former Carroll County District 8 Fire Chief, and his wife, Malisa “Lisa” Smith, former department treasurer, has come to a close through a plea agreement. The Smiths pled guilty to a Class C Felony for theft over $30,000. According to documents provided by the 24th Judaical Circuit Court, the couple will repay $30,150.86 in restitution to the District 8 Volunteer Fire Department and will receive six years of supervised probation in lieu of jail time. After the probation and if restitution ($418.76 monthly repayment) is met, the felony will be expunged from their criminal record.

  • Candidates Qualified for State, Federal Elections

    The filing deadline of April 4 provided the final list of candidates for state and federal offices. Partisan candidates are seeking their party’s nomination in the August election to advance to the General Election in November.

  • McKenzie First Responder Program Takes Flight

    McKENZIE (April 8) — The City of McKenzie’s medical first responder program continues to grow. On Saturday, ten members of the McKenzie Fire Department along with two McKenzie police officers took part in training sessions to become qualified as medical first responders.

  • THP Graduates 49 Troopers

    Tuesday, April 9

    NASHVILLE (April 5) — Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Matt Perry welcomed the newest graduating classes of Tennessee State Troopers. The department simultaneously instructed a regular 17-week trooper cadet class and an 11-week lateral trooper cadet class. The lateral class returned from their district assignments for the graduation ceremony that took place at Donelson First in Nashville, Tennessee. Governor Bill Lee served as the keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony and swore in the new troopers as they delivered their oaths of office.

  • Cancer Bake Auction Has Good Year

    McKENZIE — The Carroll County American Cancer Society netted $12,689 in its five days during the annual Cancer Bake Auction.

  • Overturned Tanker Blocks Highway

    McKENZIE (APRIL 2) — An overturned tanker loaded with herbicide blocked U.S. 79 on Tuesday evening.

  • Fireworks Top of McKenzie Agenda

    Tuesday, April 9

    The McKenzie City Council meets Thursday, April 11. On the agenda is an amendment to the Fireworks Ordinance concerning age and purchase times. The purposed sale dates fireworks within the City Limits would be on a seasonal basis from June 20 through July 5 and December 20 through January 1. With an allowance date to shot the fireworks off from June 27 through July 5, and from December 25th through January 1. The fireworks can be shot until 10 p.m., except for December 31st when they shall be allowed until 1:00 a.m. Adding to the amendment is to make it unlawful to sale to children under the age of 18 or to any intoxicated person. The purposed changes will be discussed during at 5:30 p.m. workshop before the Council meeting.

    McKenzie Marching Rebels hosted the annual McKenzie Beauty Reviews on Saturday, April 6 at Bethel University’s Bouldin Auditorium.

    McKENZIE (April 6) — Keith Hodge, the new head football coach at McKenzie High School, was welcomed to McKenzie on Saturday, April 6 during an informal meet and greet at Hometown Hangout.

  • West Carroll Recognizes Student, Faculty

    Tuesday, April 9

    The West Carroll Special School District held its monthly meeting last Thursday, where they recognized Junior Hannah Fowler as she will go through the Tennessee Governor’s School of Agriculture Science at the University of Tennessee at Martin this summer. Fowler will attend a four-week program for high school juniors and seniors to experience various aspects of agriculture and natural resources both in the classroom and through hands-on learning both on and off campus at UTM and will receive three hours college credit.

  • McKenzie High School Honors Banquet

    McKENZIE (April 2) — Eighty-four students at McKenzie High School were the honorees at the thirty-ninth annual Honors Banquet sponsored by the Rotary Club of McKenzie.

  • West Carroll High School Hosts Mock Crash

    ATWOOD — West Carroll High School hosted a mock crash illustrating the danger of drunk driving. The event was held in advance of the Junior-Senior Prom to emphasize the impact of irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

    McKenzie (April 7) — McKenzie Rebels and Lady Rebels, cheerleaders, and parents were feted at a banquet to honor the players and cheerleaders at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.

    Huntingdon Middle School announces the students who made Honor Roll the 3rd quarter of school. Principal’s Honor Roll includes students who made all A’s and Honor Roll includes students who made all A’s and B’s.

  • McKenzie Youth Soccer Kicks Off Season

    McKENZIE (April 6) — On Saturday morning, despite cool temperatures, the McKenzie Youth Soccer League kicked off its season. With a full day packed of matches, players, parents, grandparents, fans and food trucks filled the fields adjacent to McKenzie Middle School. The four age groups, 3 to 4, 5 to 7, 8 to 10 and 11 to 14 were excited to start the season.

    McKenzie Rebels Men’s Soccer defeated South Fulton 5-0 on Thursday, April 4 in McKenzie.

    McKenzie Rebels baseball earned a 9-2 victory over Martin-Westview Chargers on Thursday, April 4 and a 5-1 victory over Stewart County Rebels on Friday, April 5.
