McKENZIE — The McKenzie Rebels hosted their first scrimmage of the season on Friday, August 2 against the Camden Lions.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start swapping turnovers with their first possessions. Camden scored first on a long touchdown pass to complete their second possession. McKenzie’s next possession stalled but they got the ball right back on a fumble recovery and were unable to take advantage of it.
Camden made their second score on a third down play following a long drive.
Marquez Taylor got loose and outraced defenders to the end zone for McKenzie’s first score. McKenzie settled down on both sides of the ball especially on defense where they stopped Camden on a pair of goal-line stands and tied the scrimmage on another Marquez Taylor touchdown.
The Lions retook the lead on a fourth down scoring play with McKenzie answering with a big touchdown play from Micah Austin. Camden came right back and scored a final touchdown on a draw play.
Both JV teams saw action with McKenzie scoring prior to the scrimmage ending.
“We took steps in the right direction today,” said Coach Wade Comer. “We are a work in progress.”
McKenzie hits the road to Lexington next week for a scrimmage on Friday, August 9 before hosting Martin Westview for a jamboree on Friday, August 16.
