Thompson Named Coach of Character

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Bethel (Tenn.) baseball coach Rusty Thompson has been named the SSAC Coach of Character award winner.

Bethel student-athlete Jack Surber: “None compare to Rusty Thompson when it relates to passion for the game and his players. Despite having a family of his own, Coach Rusty takes the time to develop a personal relationship with every player that has ever suited up in the purple and gold.”

Bethel cross country coach Brandon Kilburn: “Coach Thompson from the outside would seem to be defined by wins and losses. In reality he is defined by his Christian values, being a father and husband, and all of the ways he impacts our university and town within and outside of athletics. Coach Thompson constantly creates an environment in which student-athletes are able to grow in every aspect of life.”

Each conference selects one winner.

The NAIA winner will be chosen from those honorees in September.

Candidates must embrace the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative.
