WAYNESBORO (March 3) — The McKenzie Rebels and West Carroll War Eagles met for the third time this season in Tuesday’s Region 6A Boys Basketball Semifinals at Wayne County High School. After a season split, the two teams have been itching for a decisive rematch, and it couldn’t have come at a more dramatic moment.
Regardless of the outcome, the game would mean the end of an impressive season for one team and a guaranteed Sectional appearance for the other.
The Rebels came out of the gate strong and controlled the opening frame, but the War Eagles battled back to tie it in the second. McKenzie took a two-point halftime lead with two Lucas King free throws after the buzzer. West Carroll edged out a back-and-forth third to trail by just a point at the start of the fourth. There were three ties in the first half of the frame before the War Eagles managed to create a little bit of breathing room. The Rebels cut the deficit to four points with 30 second to play, but West Carroll hit their free throws to claim a 55-48 victory.
The War Eagles advanced to the championship contest against Loretto Thursday, but more importantly, secured a Sectional appearance Monday.
McKenzie had a 12-5 lead after the first frame, led by Nate Whitsell with six points. Lucas King, Lane Horton and Micah Austin each had a pair. Jalen Anglin hit a three-pointer for West Carroll, and Josh Clark had a pair.
The War Eagles rallied 12-7 in the second quarter, led by Anglin and Jed Robinson with six points each, Robinson on a pair of threes. King led the Rebels with five, including a three, and Whitsell added a pair. At the half, McKenzie led 19-17.
West Carroll had a 15-14 edge in the third, led by Anglin with eight points, including a pair of threes. Clark scored five, and Luke Moore had a pair. King led McKenzie with eight, Whitsell scored four, and Caleb Gill had a pair. Heading into the final frame, the Rebels led 33-32.
The War Eagles claimed the win with a 23-15 tilt in the fourth, led by Moore with eleven points, including a three-pointer. Anglin scored five with a three, and Robinson hit another three. Clark and Jeremiah Bryant each had a pair. Whitsell led McKenzie with five points, including a three. King and Lazarick Hill each scored four, and Horton added a pair.
War Eagle Jalen Anglin led all scorers with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Luke Moore scored 13 with a three.
Lucas King led the Rebels with 19 points, including a three-pointer. Nate Whitsell scored 17 with a three.
