West Carroll Elementary Celebrates Literacy Milestone with Island-Themed Bash
From the Jun 3, 2025 e-Edition
TREZEVANT (May 20) — The gymnasium at West Carroll Elementary School was transformed into a tropical paradise on Tuesday as 32 percent of students celebrated reaching their end-of-year reading goals in a vibrant, island-themed celebration.
“This is such a wonderful feeling,” said Principal Dr. Jessica Williams. “We’ve focused all year on strengthening literacy—everything from reading comprehension and vocabulary to understanding both informational and literary texts. It’s incredible to see so many of our students rise to the challenge and read 100 books.”
The literacy initiative was led by school librarian Mrs. Pat Hudgins, who also coordinated the event. “We never imagined the level of excitement this program would generate or the impact it would have on our students' reading skills,” Hudgins said.
The program tied into the school’s theme for the year: “Reading Takes You Places.” Each student received a reading passport to track their progress, logging each book read throughout the school year. The promise of a mystery celebration kept students motivated, but few anticipated the festive island atmosphere awaiting them in the gym.
Students had access to a wide range of reading materials, including fiction, nonfiction, and informational books about topics such as plants and animals.
The celebration featured island-themed crafts, sand play, fruity treats including a chocolate fountain, limbo contests and festive accessories. Students even got to witness a simulated volcano eruption and learn about historical events like the attack on Pearl Harbor.
“This event was not only fun, but it was also a powerful way to boost literacy among our third and fourth graders,” said Dr. Williams. “That’s especially important with the State of Tennessee’s renewed focus on literacy and the new retention and promotion laws.”
West Carroll Elementary extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped bring this celebration to life and to the community for their continued support.
