ATWOOD — West Carroll’s School Board elected school board officers for the school year. All of the current officers were re-elected to their positions including William Robinson as chairman, Mike Foster as vice-chairman, Kyle Foster as secretary/treasurer, and Misty Mitchell as Tennessee legislative liaison.
The board heard spotlights on people and groups in the school system. Principal Jackie Wester spotlighted Kay Story and Jackie Poole for going above and beyond in their duties at West Carroll Primary. Elementary principal Tracy Foster spotlighted the fifth and sixth grade Student Advisory Committee that was formed this year.
Board members approved several trips for various school groups. They approved the first reading of a two-day softball trip to Brentwood next April. An FFA trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to the FFA National Convention was approved on first reading for 10/29-11/2. A Beta Club trip to the state Beta Convention in November was approved on first reading.
School Director Dexter Williams advised the board plans had been altered on equipment for the completion of the high school gymnasium, which would result in some savings. Williams recommended taking some of that money and lay a new design in the floor. A motion was made and approved on the recommendation.
In other action, the board approved $89,600 in budget amendments along with approving a certification of compliance for student access to textbooks and instructional materials.
Williams announced the evaluation of the director of schools had been completed and thanked the board for their input. He told the audience anyone who wanted to see the results could come to his office and view the report. He also announced applications had been accepted for the second school resource officer position recently funded by a grant. He advised the same process would be used to select this one that was used to hire Officer Joey Hedge.
Williams reminded board members the fall district meeting is at Westview High School on September 24 and the TSBA Leadership Conference and Convention is November 14-17 in Nashville.
