ATWOOD (February 6) — West Carroll celebrated Senior Night Thursday and hosted Greenfield for a pair of non-district basketball contests.
The Lady War Eagles made an impressive showing against the top-ranked, undefeated Lady Yellowjackets, leading by seven after the first quarter. The visitors rallied to take the lead before intermission and controlled the second half for a 92-60 win, but West Carroll’s girls had given the championship contenders one of their toughest battles of the waning season.
The War Eagles outscored the Yellowjackets in each of the first three quarters and cruised to a 79-56 victory.
In a pregame ceremony, 12 seniors were joined by family members on the court and recognized for their contributions to the basketball programs.
Senior cheerleaders are: Aleisha Annis, daughter of Greg and Tracy Forrest; Asia Emerson, granddaughter of Houston and Vera Emerson; Ashley Myles, daughter of Allison and Cedric Myles; Kamryn Hillsman, daughter of Catrina Hillsman; Shatara Brooks, daughter of Sharlanda, Shanta and Dorothey Emerson; and Ashton Worrell, daughter of Nathan and Shelly Worrell.
Senior managers are: Zoey Cook, daughter of David and Tonya Hilliard and Brad Cook; and Samaria Bosley, daughter of Michelle Bosley and sister of Jacob Coffman.
Senior Lady War Eagles are Macey Cunningham and Gracie Cunningham, daughters of Frank and Kim Cochran; and Denver Brooks, daughter of T.J. and Monica Brooks.
Senior War Eagle Jeremiah Bryant is the son of John and Brandy Bryant.
Lady Yellowjackets 92, Lady War Eagles 60
West Carroll had a 25-18 lead after the opening frame, led by Amaya Thompson with seven points. Tatym Keymon scored six points, and Denver Brooks and Mia Jones each had four. Gracie Cunningham hit a three-pointer, and Macey Cunningham hit a free throw. Edie Darby led Greenfield with five points, including a three. Tess Darby and Chloe Moore-McNeil each scored four. Caroline Crouse and Amy Mitchell each had a pair, and Emma Cooper hit a free throw.
The Lady Yellowjackets rallied 27-15 to take the lead in the second quarter, led by Moore-McNeil with 15, including a three. E. Darby scored six, and Mikayla Peterson had three points. Crouse added a pair, and T. Darby hit a freebie. Thompson and Keymon led the Lady War Eagles with four points each. G. Cunningham hit another three-pointer, and Brooks and Erin Norman each had a pair. At the half, the Lady Yellowjackets led 45-40.
Greenfield pulled away with a 30-13 advantage in the third, led by the Darbys with ten points each, Tess with a pair of threes and Edie with one. Moore-McNeil scored eight with a three, and Peterson added a pair. M. Cunningham and Brooks led West Carroll with four points each, Alyssa Butler hit a three, and Thompson added a pair. Entering the final frame, Greenfield led 75-53.
The Lady Yellowjackets sealed the win with a 17-7 tilt in the fourth, led by T. Darby with seven points, including a three-pointer. Moore-McNeil and Reese Biggs each scored four, and Crouse added a pair. Thompson led the Lady War Eagles with four points. Keymon added a pair, and Brooks hit a freebie.
Lady Yellowjacket Chloe Moore-McNeil led all scorers with 31 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Tess Darby scored 22 with a trio of threes. Edie Darby had 21 points with a pair of threes.
Amaya Thompson led West Carroll with 17 points. Tatym Keymon scored a dozen, and Denver Brooks had eleven points.
War Eagles 79, Yellowjackets 56
West Carroll jumped out to a 21-11 lead after the first frame, led by Jalen Anglin with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Luke Moore scored five with a three, and Tyler Johnson also hit a three. Jeremiah Bryant and Josh Clark each had a pair, and Jack Barrow hit a free throw. Jacob Floyd scored all eleven Greenfield points, including a trio of threes.
The War Eagles pushed the lead with a 26-17 advantage in the second quarter, led by Tyler Johnson with a dozen points on four three-pointers. Clark scored four, Jed Robinson hit a three, and Bryant also had three points. Moore and Anglin each added a pair. Floyd again led the Yellowjackets with nine points, including a three. Kobe Thomas and Barkley Biggs each hit a three-pointer, and Matt Scates had a pair. At the half, the War Eagles led 47-28.
West Carroll had a 20-13 tilt in the third, led by Anglin, Moore and Clark with five points each, Anglin with a three. Barrow scored three points, and Bryant added a pair. Luke Stone led Greenfield with five points, including a three. Floyd and Baker Porter each scored four, Floyd with a three. Heading into the final frame, the War Eagles led 67-41.
The Yellowjackets had a 15-12 edge in the fourth, led by Floyd with seven, including a three-pointer. Porter, Blake Holliman, Garrett Gamer and Kiah Reynolds each had a pair. Bryant hit a three for West Carroll, and Robinson also scored three points. Barrow, Andrew Huff and J.D. Pigue each had a pair.
Yellowjacket Jacob Floyd led all scorers with 31 points, including six three-pointers.
