The recent series of earthquakes in Mexico got me thinking about the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812. For those unfamiliar with the New Madrid Earthquakes, these were a set of three earthquakes and aftershocks that led to the natural creation of Reelfoot Lake in Lake and Obion counties. more
HUNTINGDON (January 19) — Carroll County will soon implement a program to help jail inmates to successfully return to society after completing their jail terms. It is called Evidence-Based Re-Entry Program. more
McKENZIE (February 9) — During the February meeting of the McKenzie City Council, on the first reading, the legislative body voted in favor of Ordinance #550 amending the text of McKenzie’s Zoning Ordinance Chapter 9, “Provisions Governing Industrial Districts”, Section 11-902 to include general merchandise in M-2 district (heavy industrial districts). This would allow for a proposed store like Dollar General to operate near the intersection of Highway 22 and University Drive. Once the second reading of Ordinance #550 is approved, the Dollar General developers will go back before the McKenzie Regional Planning Commission and present their design and other aspects to the commission before they begin construction. more
McKENZIE (March 7) — During the Tuesday evening meeting of the McKenzie Special School District Board of Education board members agreed to add cross country to McKenzie High School’s slate of athletic programs. Faculty member Beth Mathis will serve as the coach. more
TREZEVANT (MARCH 14) — Trezevant Mayor and Council are delaying the construction of an amphitheater in the city park following last month’s meeting in which the only two bids differed significantly in price. more
NASHVILLE — Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the Transportation Modernization Act, historic legislation to create a new strategy and invest $3.3 billion to accommodate Tennessee’s record growth, address traffic congestion and meet transportation needs across rural and urban communities. The bill received bipartisan legislative support and was backed by dozens of organizations across the state. more
We used to explore the mysteries of the universe from the back booth of Frank’s Dairy Bar. As budding teenagers, over a cheeseburger, fries and a cherry coke, we’d discuss relevant and eye-opening topics. Looking back, my favorite might have been the single shoe theory. more
ATWOOD (September 7) — The West Carroll Special School District school board approved a $10 million budget for the 2024 fiscal year at their meeting Thursday, Sept. 7. This budget includes a 6.25 percent salary increase for all employees of the district. more
McKenzie (September 15) — McKenzie Fire and Rescue Department donated a 1988 Pierce pumper truck to the Carroll County Fire Department on Friday, September 15. more

McKENZIE (March 9) — The City of McKenzie Board of Mayor and Council met Thursday evening with a light agenda. Two individuals from McKenzie were appointed at the recommendation of Mayor Ryan Griffin to the planning commission and housing authority. A.J. Maxwell was appointed to the McKenzie Regional Planning Commission and Karen Fowler was appointed to the housing authority. more
McKENZIE (March 17) — The City of McKenzie’s Water Department is the defendant in a lawsuit filed Friday, March 17 in the Carroll County Circuit Court by Phillip Colwell, Sr. and Phillip Colwell, Jr., as renters of a commercial building in McKenzie. more
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) today announced 102 grants totaling $232,709,981 from the state’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) fund, part of which TDEC is administering in the form of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure grants. Since August, TDEC has awarded and announced $634,404,544 in grant funds through ARP programming. more
I was raised by my favorite WWII veteran, my father. His generation is often referred to as “The Greatest Generation”. Each of us, who is old enough, knows someone from that generation who made a significant impact on our lives. They were our teachers, our coaches, our pastors, our neighbors, friends, and our mentors. These men and women came home from war and started families and businesses and made this nation a great nation. more
