GAINESVILLE, Georgia — Daphne Louise Childress, 96, of Gainesville, Georgia, died Thursday, January 14, 2021. Daphne was born in Carroll County Tennessee on September 24, 1924 as the youngest child of the late Walthan K. (Bud) Scott and Laura Stafford Scott. The family moved to McKenzie, Tennessee when Daphne was young. She attended McKenzie schools from the first grade through high school. Daphne married her high school sweetheart, James C. (Jim) Childress in 1942, just prior to his induction into the Army Air Corps for service in World War II. Her beloved husband died in 2003. The couple had been blessed with a marriage of 61 years.
She had not lived in McKenzie for many years. Jim’s career with Procter and Gamble took them to Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and New York City. Following his retirement, the couple lived in Bradenton, Florida, Maryville, Tenn., and Gainesville. At Daphne’s death, she was residing in a retirement life community in Gainesville, where she spent much of her time in volunteer work.
She was a life-long Baptist, attended services regularly where she lived, and supported the Spiritual Life Committee. She was a loving, caring daughter and sister, a proud wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a friend to many throughout the years.
In addition to her parents and husband, her four brothers and sister preceded her in death. Surviving are her son, Major General Jim Childress (USAF, Retired), and his wife Cassie; three grandsons, Scott, Mike (Tanya), and Kelly (Wendy) Childress, three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Among her many nieces and nephews are Alice Summers of Mt. Prospect, Illinois (formerly of McKenzie), and Ricky Scott of McKenzie.
Daphne will be laid to rest with her husband at Carroll Memorial Gardens near McKenzie. Services will be held at a later date.
