TENNESSEE (June 24) — Average gasoline prices in Tennessee declined 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.97/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 20.0 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 12.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 2.4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.76 per gallon. more
Tennessee’s new third grade retention law is adding undue stress on parents and grade school children. The new retention law hinges on the English Language Arts section of TCAP / TNReady testing. Third graders who score below or approaching proficiency face possible retention. Students who do not meet the required score on the state test must go to summer school and have a tutor for the entirety of fourth grade. Those students must then hit a specific growth goal the next year to move on to the fifth grade. If a parent believes their child does not need to be held back they can attempt to get an appeal. more
Each year the McKenzie Rotary Club afford two McKenzie students to the opportunity to take part in the Rotary Young Leadership Awards (RYLA). This year, Gracie Aird and Carton Townes attended RYLA camp at Austin Peay University. more

PARIS (June 17) — The Paris and Henry County Healthcare Foundation announced Brett Toombs, 2024 graduate of McKenzie High School, as the recipient of the 2024 McLean-Pedersen Endowment Scholarship. Toombs will attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the fall, where she plans to major in Physical Therapy. more
