    NASHVILLE (March 4) — Throughout the month of March, the Tennessee Department of Education invites all Tennesseans to celebrate Tennessee Literacy Month, as proclaimed by Governor Bill Lee, spotlighting the Reading 360 initiative and the focus Tennessee’s educators, families, elected officials, and community partners have on continuing to improve literacy rates for all learners in the state.

  • Gasoline Prices Rise During Week

    TENNESSEE — Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 7.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.99/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 16.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 3.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 2.7 cents in the last week and stands at $4.03 per gallon.

    JACKSON (February 29) — LIFELINE Blood Services will host their Annual “St, Patrick’s Day” Blood Drive at their Jackson Center on Thursday, March 14 from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., at 183 Sterling Farms DR in Jackson, TN. All donors will receive a t-shirt and the first 50 donors will receive a food voucher for a free lunch special and drink from Mulligan’s, located at 1364 Union University Drive.

    HUNTINGDON (February 28) — On Wednesday, the home of Andrew and Lindsey Barnett caught fire. Carroll County 911 received a call stating smoke was coming from the Browning Avenue residence. The family was not home at the time of the fire.

    Goodbye friend, Charles Felts died suddenly on March 1. He was the picture of health for a 75-year-old man. He took great pride in everything he did. He was a valued associate of The McKenzie Banner. No task was too great. No task was too little. He was always eager to help.

  • The Fillies are Headed to the ‘Boro

    The Huntingdon Fillies punched their ticket to Murfreesboro to play in the State Tournament Class AA quarterfinals with two late-game victorious rallies. Wednesday night the Fillies defeated Cheatham County 67-60 for the Region 6-2AA title. After trailing the Lady Cubs for most of the game, Huntingdon pushed forward in the final minutes to win the region title.

  • Mustangs End Season With a Heart-breaker

    CAMDEN (February 27) — On Tuesday, the Huntingdon Mustangs lost to East Hickman in the region semifinals after leading 57-54 with 11 seconds remaining in regulation time.

  • McKenzie Basketball Falls Short at Houston County

    HOUSTON COUNTY (February 26, 27) — McKenzie basketball traveled to Houston County in the regional tournament last week looking to extend to their basketball season. The Lady Rebels faced off against the Wayne County Lady Wildcats while the Rebels battled the Frank Hughes Lions. Both McKenzie teams were unsuccessful in pulling off the wins as their season drew to a close.

  • Bethel Men’s Indoor Track Season Ends

    BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Bethel University Men's Track team ended one of the best indoor track performances in Bethel history. The Distance-Medley relay who won the Mid-South Conference Championship, ended up 22nd in the nation. All-American Joseph Skoog continued his historic run after finishing runner-up in the 3000m and then bouncing back in the 5000m to finish third. Skoog was coming off a Mid-South Conference Championship. The ceiling is high for Bethel's Track team as they now prepare to be ready for outdoor competition.

    BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The No. 6 seeded Bethel Wildcats fell to the No. 3 seeded Georgetown Tigers 80-70 Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament in Bowling Green. The Wildcats trailed by 16 at the half but battled back and gave the Tigers all they wanted and more in the second half.
